his band FEAR in the film The Decline of Western Civilization. He scared the Hell out of me.
About 15 years later I was out in Joshua Tree recording with Victoria Williams. Don Heffington was
sitting around strumming a guitar. I asked him what he was playing. He asked if I remembered a
band named Fear, I said of course then he asked if I knew who Lee Ving was, I said, “yes I do”.
Then he said that he recorded with Lee Ving’s country band about 10 years ago and I said, “Range
War”? Don asked me how the Hell did I know about Range War. A buddy of mine Mark Ford was a
part of the early Los Angeles punk rock scene and he would always tell me about the time he saw
Lee Ving play with his country band Range War, but they never put out an album, he loved them.
Anyways, Don started to sing me “The King Of The 12 Ounce Bottles” and I recorded him right
there on the spot. This was one of Lee Ving’s Range War songs.
A few years later Don Heffington taught the song to Mike Stinson (my good buddy) and Mike started
doing it in his gigs around Hollywood. One night Mike Stinson ended up on a bill with Lee Ving, the
rest is history.
I called Lee up and asked if he would be interested in doing some recordings. He had a couple of
ideas so I called Don Heffington, Tony Gilkyson and Jimmy Ashhurst.
History, what kind of history? I’m not sure. But history.
